ORONO — A one goal and four assist performance by Orono senior forward Matt Cloutier propelled the Red Riots past Old Town 6-2 Friday night at Alfond Arena.

The Red Riots win moves Orono to 1-0-0 for the season. Old Town falls to 0-1-0 overall.

“It was good to start off with a nice and solid win like that,” Orono Head Coach Greg Hirsch said. “I thought we could have been a little sharper, as any team on opening night can be, so the good thing is we have a game tomorrow night.”

Nick Nadeau chipped in two goals and two assists for Red Riots as he helped spark the offensive effort on a big night for Orono’s first line as Einar Looktu chipped in a goal and starting senior defender Trevor Francis pitched in a goal and two assists.

“That line is going to be our key,” said Hirsch. “When they’re quick and they’re moving well and getting shots on net they’re tough to play against. If the execute and we make sure they’re constantly using their speed we’ll be successful.”

Old Town freshman goalie Chase Albert started his varsity career with a heavy work-load as over the course of the night Orono bombarded him with 39 shots, 33 of which he stopped.

“He is a great goalie,” Old Town Head Coach Ryan Bernard said. “It was great effort by him.”

The Coyotes mustered 19 shots on Orono senior goalie Michael Brown as the Orono net-minder turned away 17 shots.

I liked what I saw, we’re a young team,” Bernard said. “The improvement from the first to the third period was outstanding and we’re looking forward to a strong season if we can keep that up.

Old Town netted the game’s first goal as sophomore forward Damien Spencer provided the Coyotes with an early 1-0 lead at the 1:59 mark of the first period.

Forwards Jordan Pinkham and Nick Gaudet each earned an assist on the goal as Spencer found himself alone with the puck after following a rebound and fired a quick wrist shot into the back of the net over Brown’s right shoulder.

Orono responded halfway through the period as the Red Riots buried two goals within 10 seconds of each other to take a 2-1 lead.

Nadeau scored at the 9:31 mark of the period as the Red Riots tied the game at 1-1. Cloutier and senior defender Zach Williams each chipped in an assist on the goal.

Francis staked the Red Riots to a 2-1 lead 10 seconds later at the 9:41 mark of the period as he finished an offensive rush with a wide-open goal off of an assist from Cloutier.

Cloutier drew the Old Town defender to the left and dropped the puck across the slot where Francis buried the puck into the back of the net as the Riots busted into the attacking zone following a center ice faceoff win.

Nadeau chipped in an assist on the goal.

Cloutier added a goal at the 11:29 mark of the first to extend the Red Riots lead to 3-1 with Senior defender Cory Danielson and Francis earning assists.

Nadeau’s second goal of the game with 30 seconds remaining in the first period pushed the Red Riots lead over the Coyotes to 4-1 as the teams headed into first intermission.

Cloutier and Francis each added assists.

Orono attacked the Coyotes with heavy pressure in the second period as they peppered Alberts with shots, but Alberts remained solid in net for the Coyotes.

Old Town cut the Red Riots lead to 4-2 at the 9:16 mark of the second period as senior forward Aaron Pinkham skated around the only Orono defender in the zone and into the high slot where he beat Brown with a wrist shot low and to the right.

Ethan Harris provided the assist for the Coyotes on the goal that pushed the score to 4-2.

Orono responded to the Old Town score with a goal at the 12:19 mark of the second period as Loktu drilled a slap shot past Alberts off of a set faceoff play.

Loktu’s goal pushed the Red Riots lead to 5-2 over the Coyotes as teams headed to the second intermission.

The Red Riots tacked one more onto the lead in the third period as Orono played a more conservative pace and settled for shots from outside of the high-quality scoring areas.

Michael Fowler pushed the score to 6-2 in favor of Orono at the 9:27 mark of the period with Nadeau and Williams each gathering an assist on the goal.

Brown moves to 1-0-0 on the season for Orono with the win. Albert drops to 0-1-0 on the year for Old Town.

Orono was 0-for-4 on the power play. Old Town finished the game 0-for-6 with an extra skater.
