Black Bears release 2012-’13 roster

Portland, ME – The University of Maine released its men’s ice hockey roster for the upcoming 2012-2013 season on Monday.

Highlighted by several highly touted incoming freshmen, the roster includes 11 returning upperclassmen, led by seniors Joey Diamond and Adam Shemansky.

Diamond, who will be one of three captains of the roster, is the highest returning scorer on the team after he finished the 2011-’12 season with a team-high 25 goals, 22 assists for 47 points in 37 games.

Shemansky appeared in all 40 games for the Black Bears, recording 21 points on the season.

The roster consists of six seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and nine freshmen.

Incoming freshman Devin Shore is expected to add a scoring punch to the Black Bears lineup.

Shore played for the Whitby Fury of the OJHL last season where he scored 90 points (36g, 54a) in 64 games. The 6-0, 184-pound forward was taken in the second round (61st overall) by the Dallas Stars in the last months NHL Entry Draft in Pittsburgh.

Joining Shore is defenseman Ben Hutton, who was also drafted last month, as the Vancouver Canucks took the 6-3, 195-pound d-man in the fifth round (147th overall). Hutton comes from Prescott, Ontario, a city located south of Ottawa, Ontario, and he played his minor hockey with the Nepean Raiders and Kemptville 73’s. He finished the season with 11 goals, 32 assists for 43 points in 57 games.

Dan Sullivan will return between the pipes this season, looking to building off a strong 2011-’12 season.

The York, PA native finished last year with a 22-11-3 record, posting a 2.59 GAA and a .909 save percentage.

He’ll be joined by junior Martin Ouellette and incoming freshman Matt Morris, who played last season for former UMaine standout Jim Montgomery with the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

In 38 games, Morris finished with a 19-13-2 record with a 2.58 GAA and a .894 save percentage.

The Black Bears will have three in-state players on the roster as Jacob Rutt and Mark Anthoine will be joined by Bowdoinham’s Kyle Williams.
