Senior C.J. Maksut notched an assist and a goal in the Trojan’s 9-1 victory, surpassing Matt Brennick of the class of 2000 and becoming the new all time points leader at Thornton Academy with 113 points.
Maksut tied the school’s all-time points record in the Thornton’s last game against Scarborough, Wednesday night.
Thornton jumped on the scoreboard quickly with Andrew Carignan finding the net at 1:29, assisted by Alex Fallon.
Just a couple minutes later, Bryan Dallaire put one over the gloveside shoulder of Waterville’s Cody Thibodeau at 3:42, and with Maksut’s assist on the play, he moved to 112 career points and the new school record.
“It was pretty cool, we got it out of the way early in the game,” said Maksut. “I think the most important part is that we had a good team effort tonight. We wanted the win, I wasn’t really too worried about the record, we came in hoping we could get the win, and we got it done.”
“We got efforts from all four lines, the defense played well; we had our other goalie in who did a hell of a job too, an all around team effort which is good for us.”
Of the nine goals scored by Thornton Academy, eight different Golden Trojans put the puck in the net in a well-rounded team effort.
Greg Lodge scored the third goal of the night at 4:22, assisted by Alex Fallon. Maksut then beat Thibodeau blocker side at 7:33 with assists from Dallaire and Downing, making it 4-0 Thornton Academy, and boosting his career total to 113 points.

“Playing with Bryan, the two of them have built a chemistry where they each know where each other’s gonna be and when they’re gonna be there,” said Thornton coach Jamie Gagnon.
“When you’ve got the hockey I.Q. like those two have, it doesn’t take long to build that chemistry, they really know where to be, how to get themselves open, how to work without the puck which is really the most important thing is the work you do without the puck, both of them work extremely hard to put themselves in position to make a play.”
It was the first line that he played on his freshman year that Maksut says was the most influential to him, building a solid foundation early on for his impressive high school career.
“I was a freshman, we had a senior captain (Chris Stasio) on our line, and we also had a sophomore (Sam Canales) who eventually became a captain, so I had two leaders to show me the ropes there, and my high school career took off from there, and I learned so much from them and their leadership. I think that was the most fun line I’ve played on.”
“Coming in as a freshman you get nervous, but (Stasio) really took me under his wing, as well as Canales did, and lead by example.”
Before the first period was up, Lodge would add another at 8:33, and then Alex Lambert lit the lamp at 13:04, giving Thornton a commanding 6-0 lead after the opening period.
The Trojans got two more in the second period before Waterville was able to get on the scoreboard, with goals from Bryce Lamontagne at 4:37 and Matt Letellier at 6:36, making it 8-0 Thornton.
At this point, Dakota Gendreau took over in net for the Purple Panthers. Determined not to be shut out, the Waterville offense finally caught a break at 13:37 with a goal from Tommy Samson assisted by Ben Roy to make it an 8-1 game after two periods.
Thornton’s Filip Takac went in on a breakaway early in the third period and scored the final goal of the game at 0:51 for a 9-1 victory for Thornton Academy.
Though Maksut admits he is excited about his accomplishment, he does not want to let his personal achievements distract him from his team’s goals for the season.
“I’m not gonna say that it’s not a cool thing, I can respect that I am part of the history at TA, and I think that’s really cool, but I just want to focus on the season. The team’s goal is to win the State Championship and that’s what I’m focused on too, I’m not too worried about individual awards, but at the same time I think it’s pretty cool that I actually did it.”
The previous point’s record stood for 12 years before Maksut was able to surpass it. There is a pretty good chance that his record will be safe for many seasons to come.
“It’s a tremendous accomplishment, especially when you start thinking about playing tier one, there aren’t very many easy games where you can rack up points,” said Gagnon.
“This is not an easy league to be putting up over 111 points. Who knows where the ceiling is (for Maksut) at this point, we do have a lot of hockey left, at least nine more games and hopefully a couple more beyond that as well. We hope he doesn’t slow down, from a team perspective. We don’t know where that ceiling is yet and we don’t know who’s coming behind him. It’s gonna be a lofty goal to try to overcome, that’s for sure.”
