The struggles continue for the Portland Pirates.

For the second consecutive game, the Pirates were shut out by the opposition. This time it was the Worcester Sharks, who received contributions from five different goal scorers, to earn a 5-0 shutout victory against the Pirates before 3,162 at the DCU Center Sunday afternoon.

Harri Sateri stopped all 25 shots to hand the Pirates their second shutout in as many days after being held off the board by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-0, Saturday on home ice.

The last goal scored by the Pirates was from Ryan Duncan at the 1:37 mark of the third period, Friday in Providence as the scoreless streak is now at 138 minutes, 23 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 137:23 set back during the 2004-’05 season when the Pirates, under the Washington Capitals affiliation, were shutout over the span of four games, starting late in the third period on Dec. 28, 2004 until Jan. 1, 2005 when Tomas Fleischmann scored early in the first period against the former Lowell Lock Monsters.

Worcester broke the scoring open with power-play goal from Brodie Reid, snapping shot that beat Pirates goalie Justin Pogge on the blocker side only seven minutes into the game.

In the second period, the Sharks added a pair of goals to increase its’ lead to 3-0, including a second power-play goal by Reid with 2:05 remaining in the period.

The Pirates penalty kill over the last eight games has been disastrous by any stretch of the imagination, killing only 67.6 percent (12-for-37) of opposition power plays. Worcester finished the night 2-for-3 with the man advantage, while Portland was 0-for-7.

Portland’s power play over that span isn’t any better right now, going (7-for-44) 15.90 percent.

Mike Connolly made it 4-0 for Worcester at the 13:54 mark of the third period when he completed a two-on-one rush with Jack Combs, beating Pogge as he slide over too far in the direction of Connolly, leaving the far post open.

With 1:42 left in the game, the Sharks put an exclamation point on the night with their fifth goal of the game as James Livingston blew past the Pirates defense for a breakaway and snapping the shot by Pogge, who finished the night with 20 saves of 25 shots.

NOTES: The Phoenix Coyotes announced that Patrick O’Sullivan has been assigned to Portland. O’Sullivan played six games for Portland, scoring two goals, five assists for seven points before being recalled by the Coyotes on Dec. 26. The North Carolina native has played 23 games for the Coyotes, recording four points (two goals, two assists) with a minus-4 rating… Nathan Oystrick was listed as a scratch for the Pirates. He left Saturday night’s game against Bridgeport with less than two minutes remaining in the game and never returned… Former Maineiac Alex Bourret was signed to a PTO by the Worcester Sharks. Bourret played this season for the Wichita Thunder of the CHL before signing with the Sharks. His two assists today were his first point for the Sharks in only his third game with the team.
