Coming into the tournament, Falmouth has played three regular season games, sporting a 2-1 record, while Lockview coach Tom Myketyn said that his squad had roughly 30 games under their belts so far, due to their season starting much earlier on October 1st.
“We’re from Canada. We like hockey there. They like us playing.”
“Our season’s a little bit longer,” he said. We like our sport. I don’t know that we could go with a shorter schedule. I like it, our parents enjoy coming to the rink and watching the kids, the guys like playing, and we’re happy with the number of games we’re playing.”
Lockview jumped on the scoreboard early with a goal by Alex Feltmate at 1:14. The Dragons would strike again at 6:19 with a shot from the point by Andrew Paterson to make it 2-0 Lockview after the first period. In the second, Falmouth scored two short-handed breakaway goals to fight back and tie things up at 2.
Jackson Pike hit Benjamin Freeman with a pass on the blue line, sending him in all alone behind the Lockview defense. A quick fake and a high wrister beat the glove of Dragons’ goaltender Alex Taylor to make it a 2-1 game.
In another shorthanded situation, Mitchell Tapley picked off a pass at the blue line between two Lockview defensemen and skated to the other end where he was almost caught, but fought off a defender’s stick to sneak it in five hole at 10:06 to tie things up at two goals apiece.
With just five seconds left in the period, Tony Hart fired a slapshot from outside the face-off circle, sneaking it under the leg pad of Falmouth’s Dane Pauls to make it 3-2 Lockview after two periods of play.
Hart scored again at 8:22 of the third period for a 4-2 Lockview victory.
This is the first appearance for Lockview in the Maine High School Hockey Invitational. In past years they have participated in holiday tournaments in Lake Placid, NY, Montreal, and Quebec City. Coach Myketyn said his team has really been enjoying the rinks and the tournament so far, as well as sight-seeing in Portland.
“We’ve got a 56-passenger bus and we’ve got 52 of the seats full. We brought a lot of people with us and we’re having a lot of fun.”
