By  Published: 11th December 2011

Twice, the Portland Pirates gave up a two-goal lead as the Manchester Monarchs prevailed in the shootout, 5-4, before 6,497 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Robert Czarnik and Marc-Andre Cliché scored in the shootout, while Monarchs’ goaltender Martin Jones stopped all four shooters he faced.

The Pirates wrap up its’ seven-game road trip with a 3-3-1 record, taking five of six points this past weekend.

The Pirates scored twice in a 51 second span to take a 2-0 in the first seven minutes of the first period.

Portland forward Brett MacLean, who scored twice Saturday in Bridgeport, opened the scoring after finding the rebound, beating Jones, followed by Brock Trotter’s goal at 6:40 of the first period.

Only 16 seconds later, the Monarchs bounced back as Patrick Mullins put one past Pirates’ goalie Justin Pogge.

In the second period, the Pirates and Monarchs traded goals only 31 seconds apart as MacLean scored his second of the game while on the power play, and Robert Czarnik’s one-timer from the right circle gave Portland a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

With 14 minutes left in the game, Stefan Legin converted on a two-on-one, beating Pogge to again pull the Monarchs even with the Pirates, 3-3.

At 7:23, Pirates’ defenseman Nathan Oystrick was the recipient of a lucky bounce – his second in as many games – as he got his stick on a bouncing puck that found it’s way past Jones as Portland gained a 4-3 lead.

Legin, who was acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia in September, recorded his second goal of game – his second of the season – with a laser over Pogge’s shoulder at the 9:35 mark of the period.

Pogge finished the night with 31 saves in the loss, while Jones stopped 24 of 28 shots for the win as the Monarchs pulled into the first place tie in the AHL’s Atlantic Division with the St. John’s IceCaps.
