Brunswick, ME – The Salve Regina Seahawks came through in the clutch at the Bowdoin-Colby Classic Sunday afternoon.
After a Scott Hariff blast tied the game at two for Colby College with 2:29 to play in the game, a timeout was all the Seahawks needed.
Chad Goodwin ripped a shot as he gained entry into the offensive zone to give the Seahawks a 3-2 victory with 1:14 to play. Assists went to Jacob Hutt and Cody Zweifel.
“I told them not to change their game. ‘You just need to keep playing hard’,” said Salve Regina head coach Andy Boschetto of taking a timeout after Colby tied the game up at two. “I didn’t want a letdown, the momentum obviously shifted. I didn’t want them to gain momentum any further.”
“I just saw a loose puck at center ice and I went down and just took a shot,” said Chad Goodwin on his goal.
Colby head coach Stan Moore wasn’t a happy camper after the game.
“Actually, it’s an easy loss when you don’t execute when you should be executing,” said Moore, who is in his first season behind the bench at Colby, replacing Jim Tortorella. “That’s an acceptable loss based on the performance.”
“It was a great shot, but I don’t think you give anybody 30-40 feet to shoot. Our defensemen are gapped up appropriately, making it difficult for them entering the zone. That’s how any coach wants their players to play to make it tight to gain entry in the zone. Unfortunately, we had a couple guys well-backed in the zone and allowed the rush without adjusting. That resulted the amount of time the (Goodwin) had to make what was a very good shot.”
The Seahawks improve to 3-4-0 (1-2-0 ECAC Northeast) on the season while Colby drops to 1-3-0 (0-2-0 NESCAC).
The Mules broke the ice as Ray Zeek picked the top corner with 5:24 remaining in the first period. The assists went to Chris Buonomo and Michael Doherty.
The Seahawks responded with 11 seconds left in the period as Colby’s power play expired. David Watkins notched the goal with William Gomolinski picking up the lone assist on the goal.
“Our guys played well,” said Boschetto. “We win as a team and we lose as a team.”
“It never helps when they have more shots on your power play then you do,” said Moore as Colby’s power play ended right as Salve Regina got on the board.
The Watkins-Gomolinski connection struck again in the second period as Gomolinski stuffed the puck home at the 9:05 mark on the man advantage. Watkins picked up the lone assist on the goal.
“DJ is a meat-and-potatoes player. He works hard every day, and is a very smart player,” Boschetto added. ”He played well tonight so did (Gomolinski).
The Seahawks were 1-for-4 on the power play while the Mules went 0-for-2.
Matt Delany made 20 saves for Colby while Mike McDonald stopped 29 shots.
“He played solid for us,” said Boschetto of McDonald. “He’s playing better-and-better every game. His confidence is higher and if he plays like that way, it will help us in the long run.”
