The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed another member of last season’s San Antonio Rampage.
The Coyotes re-signed forward Viktor Tikhonov on Wednesday to a one-year, two-way contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the team per club policy.
The 23-year-old native of Riga, Latvia set career highs in assists (23) and points (33) in 60 games last season with the Coyotes’ former minor league affiliate in San Antonio.Tikhonov has 61 NHL games played with the Coyotes where he posted eight goals, eight assists with a minus-3 rating.
It’s unlikely that Tikhonov will play with the Coyotes AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates, this season as his contract contains a European Assignment clause, which allows him to be assigned to European or Russian club instead of the Pirates.
Tikhonov, who was named after his grandfather who was coach of the Russian Red Army squad and later the Russian National Team, spent part of the 2009-‘10 season in the KHL with Cherepovets Severstal.
At 6-2, 190-pounds, Tikhonov was the Coyotes’ second pick in the first round (28th overall) of the 2008 Entry Draft.
He represented Russia at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording five goals and two assists in seven games to be named the Best Forward while leading Russia to a bronze medal.
