The Phoenix Coyotes were fairly active in day 2 of the NHL Entry Draft, which was held this year in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Not only did the Coyotes make seven selections on Saturday they acquired a potential player for their new AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates, picking up center Marc-Antoine Pouliot in exchange for Phoenix’s seventh round pick (#201 overall).
Pirates are expected to announce the Coyotes as the new NHL partner in a press conference on Monday, replacing the Buffalo Sabres who recently moved their minor league operations back to Rochester, NY after purchasing the Rochester Americans.
Pouliot was a first round draft pick (#22 overall) of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and spent five years in the organization before signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay organization last season.
In 69 games with the Norfolk Admirals, Tampa’s AHL affiliate, he scored 25 goals, 47 assists for 73 points with a plus-13 rating.
The Quebec City, PQ native is a restricted free agent this summer.
With their seven picks on Saturday, the Coyotes selected a pair of players in the second round including Alexander Ruuttu, the son of former NHL player Christian Ruuttu, who spent six years with the Buffalo Sabres. The other second round selection for Phoenix was Oshawa Generals forward Lucas Lessio.
Prince Albert defenseman Harrison Ruopp was selected in the third round. Kale Kessy (Medicine Hat), Darian Dziurzynski (Saskatoon), Andrew Fritsch (Owen Sound) and Zac Larraza (US U-18) were the other picks taken by the Coyotes.
