The USHL conducted their annual Entry Draft on Monday and three University of Maine recruits heard their name called.
Forward Ryan Loomberg, a 2012 or 2013 recruit was the first to go off the board, as the Muskegon Lumberjacks selected him sixth overall. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native had 52 goals and 47 assists in 57 games with the Hill Academy this past season.
“I like to think I’m an all-around player, and I’ll do whatever coach needs me to do,” Lomberg said in the Muskegon Lumberjacks media release. “I like to think I can score whenever the team needs one the most. I’m a power forward, and I like to throw the body around.”
He expects to be a key contributor for the Lumberjacks this upcoming season.
“I developed a lot of skills and got a lot stronger with Hill Academy,” he said. “I think I’ll be able to step into USHL action and contribute right away.”
In the fifth round saw the Youngstown Phantoms select Lomberg’s Hill Academy teammate, defenseman Daniel Renouf. He had ten goals and 43 assists in 62 games. He’s also expected to be in Orono either the beginning of the 2012 or 2013 campaign.
In the 13th round the Phamtoms selected forward Ryan Badger who had nine goals and 16 assists in 20 games in Atlantic Youth Hockey League play with the Team Comcast midget major team. In the Tier I Elite Hockey League, he had 20 goals and 22 assists in 40 games.
Badger is looking forward to play in the USHL someday.
“I am undecided right now,” Badger admitted after he made his commitment in early March. “My (midget) coach wants me to come back next year, but Maine says they are going to talk to me about it.”
The Cedar Rough Riders selected forward Marc-Andre Carre, who played a handful of games around the Christmas holiday in 2009-2010 for the Lewiston Maineiacs. With the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this year, the 19-year old had 39 goals and 67 assists in 55 games.
NOTES: 2013 recruit Jared Gilbert took part in the Kitchener Rangers rookie camp this past weekend. The defenseman was selected in the third round of the Ontario Hockey League on May 7th. If he signs with the Rangers, he forfeits his NCAA eligibility.
