Maineiacs ‘down’ but not out against Saint John

By  Published: 25th April 2011

It’s all in the head.

Despite being down 2-0 to the Saint John Sea Dogs in the best-of-seven QMJHL semifinals, Lewiston Maineiacs head coach J.F. Houle said his players aren’t doing anything wrong tactically.

“We’ve played some good hockey as of late,” Houle said. “Right now, it’s mental so we just have to prepare and get ready to go. X’s and O’s, we know what we are doing out there. If you look at the game-tape, the guys are working hard. They know their systems. It’s just up here in the head.”

Don’t expect changes in Lewiston’s line-up after dropping Game 2, 4-1.

“We’ve been playing good hockey,” Houle strongly stated. “They were on the power play for 20 (minutes) out of a 60 minute game. A team like that on the power play for 20 minutes should win. If they don’t they would be mad. They deserved to win and their special teams were better than ours. That was the biggest difference in game two.”

The Maineiacs return to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday night where this post season they are 5-1 on home ice.

“I don’t think there’s a huge difference between the way we approached the playoffs and the regular season,” Houle stated. “Obviously the intensity is up a level because of the playoffs. Like we have done all year, we are going to take it period-by-period and shift-by-shift. That’s all you can do when you are down 2-0. You can’t look ahead. You can’t look back.”

“We are a resilient team and we are going to play as hard as we can. Hopefully, we will have a bounce here and there.”

The team could be without two of their veteran defensemen in Olivier-Dame Malka, who received a five-minute hitting from behind penalty on Saint John forward Jonathan Huberdeau Saturday night and could face supplemental discipline from the league. The other is Samuel Finn who has an undisclosed injury.

“It’s tough to prepare for that when you lose two of your good players,” said Houle. “We don’t know what’s going to happen, but (Finn) is day-to-day. (Michael) Chaput is day-to-day. Malka we haven’t heard from the league yet.”

The league announced one suspension Monday to Quebec Remparts defenseman Guillaume Rousseau for one game for an illegal hit to the head.

Lewiston has been in this situation before playing without two of their key defenseman this season.

“We have (Alex) Zafiris, who has played back there back-and-forth (between forward and defense),” Houle mentioned. “The rest of the defensemen showed they can play this year. We were short two defensemen a lot this year. It’s nothing different. Maybe those two can play. I am not too worried about it right now.”

NOTES: The Lewiston Maineiacs have called up goaltender Nathan Kelly for an extra body in practice.

“Nathan Kelly is a real good guy and fun to be around,” Houle said “He wanted to spend sometime around the team, so it’s nice to have him.”
