Pirates stockpiling AHL awards

By  Published: 31st March 2011

The postseason awards are starting to roll in and already in the past two days the Portland Pirates have racked up some hardware.

On Wednesday, Luke Adam joined a long list of former Pirates by being named to the AHL All-Rookie Team, followed by Thursday’s announcement that Mark Mancari and Marc-Andre Gragnani have been named AHL First Team All-Stars.

Adam becomes the sixth player from the Pirates organization to be named to the award, joining Tyler Ennis, Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy during the current Sabres affiliation, and Bobby Ryan and Ryan Shannon with the Anaheim Ducks.

Adam, 20, currently second in rookie-scoring with 54 points (25g, 29a) with a plus-23 rating in just 50 games with the Pirates. The St. John’s, NL native began the season, scoring four points to be named the AHL Player of the Week and went on to see action with the Buffalo Sabres on five separate occasions, scoring three goals and one assist in 19 games.

Joining Adam as award winners in the AHL this season were Mark Mancari and Marc-Andre Gragnani, who both had stellar seasons with the Pirates and are now on recall with the Buffalo Sabres.

Mancari has been near or at the top of the AHL scoring race for most of the season, posting 32 goals, 32 assists for 64 points in 56 games for the Pirates.

The London, Ontario native has been on recall to Buffalo since March 10th where he’s recorded six points (1g, 5a) in 15 games.

Marc-Andre Gragnani has had nothing short of a magical season in Portland. After starting the season with a knee injury he suffered in training camp, the veteran defenseman has put together a record-breaking season with the Pirates. He currently leads the AHL in points with 12 goals, 48 assists for 60 point in 63 games.

Gragnani’s 60 points and 48 assists are both Portland Pirates franchise records for a defenseman.

Recently recalled to the Buffalo Sabres, Gragnani recorded his first career NHL point last night with an assists against the New York Rangers.
