Flynn and O’Neill named Black Bear captains

Tim Whitehead, head coach of the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team, announced Brian Flynn and Will O’Neill as the new captain’s for the Black Bears upcoming season.

Flynn, who will be a senior, has played in 112 consecutive games of his 113-game career as a Black Bear. The once freshman walk-on has tallied 51 goals in his career, including a team-high 20 goals this past season.

Flynn, a native a Lynnfield, Mass was awarded the Len Ceglarski Award by Hockey East for his individual sportsmanship, the award is voted on by coaches, sports information directors and league officials.

Joining Flynn will be O’Neill, who will hold the position as team captain as well for his upcoming senior season. The dangerous blueliner has racked up 68 points for Maine with 17 of them being goals and the other 56 as assists.

Spencer Abbott and Mike Cornell will wear the “A” for the Black Bears as assistant captains.

Former Black Bear Gustav Nyquist has started off on the right foot since being assigned to the Grand Rapid Griffins, the Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate where the hopeful future Red Wing star has played in two games, scoring his first professional goal and an assist. Nyquist was a top-10 Hobey Baker finalist and was named to the New England Men’s Division-I All-Star team for the second year in a row.

Along with Nyquist and Tanner House, two other former Maine players have signed try-out contract with NHL teams.

Josh Van Dyk has signed with the Calgary Flames and has been assigned to the Abbotsford Heat, but hasn’t seen any ice time yet.

Mike Banwell also has signed with an NHL team, the New Jersey Devils and reported to the Albany Devils, but also hasn’t played in a game yet.
