Lewiston, ME – Despite having 20 State Championships in their trophy case, Lewiston High School had never had a Travis Roy award winner until Sunday afternoon when goaltender Cam Poussard was awarded the trophy which is given to the most outstanding senior hockey player in Class A.
He was presented with the award at the Maine Class A Coaches Association Awards Banquet held in Lewiston.
“I am thinking through the entire event is that I am going up against the best of the best in the state,” said Cam Poussard after the banquet. “Anybody could have won as easily as I could. I really commend them for what they have done for their teams this season. They deserve to win it as well. I wish they awarded the award to everyone.”
The other three finalists of the award include Alex Parker of St. Dominic Academy, Sam Canales of Thornton Academy, and Nick Gagne of Biddeford High School.
“We are all friends up there,” Poussard stated. “Everyone was clapping for each other and we are all buds. It just shows how tight knit the hockey community is and shows how everyone is friends. It’s a good environment to play hockey in.”
Lewiston Head Coach Jamie Belleau can’t key in on one moment with Cam.
“There are a lot of special moments with Cam,” Belleau said. “Probably more of them are what happens with our team as a group as well as the saves he makes. He made some of the saves in the St. Dom’s game and he was solid all the time.”
Poussard said to be the first Lewiston High School player to win the award is special
“One of my goals was to win a state championship for Lewiston,” Poussard said. “Lewiston has won many state championships in the past, but never had we had a Travis Roy award winner. I think the program respects that. Although, we didn’t get done what we wanted to do at the state game this year, I think getting the Travis Roy is a big thing for the program, not just for me, but for the program.”
Belleau mentioned how important this team was to the school and community.
“He epitomizes the type of hockey player and student-athlete you like to have on any hockey program,” Belleau said. “We are particularly lucky to have him along with ten-eleven other seniors on our hockey team. It really set a good example for our youth hockey programs, community, and school.
Poussard amassed 55 career wins with the Blue Devils including an astonishing 27 shutouts in that span, but that’s not what Poussard is going to remember of his four year career.
“I am here to talk to you today about the family that I have come to known over the past four years which is my team,” Poussard said during his speech. “It’s been a blast to be a part of each one of those teams in their own unique way. Nothing compares to the charisma, camaraderie, and friendship that I had with the guys this year.”
It was current Scarborough Head Coach, Norm Gagne who gave Poussard his chance in a game against Bangor High School in his freshman year while coaching at Lewiston High School.
“I was just hoping just to get a few starts here and there,” Poussard said. “One thing happened, another thing happened and it was a chain reaction where I got more and more starts. (Gagne) really is the pinnacle what started my career. I really appreciate what Mr. Gagne has done at Lewiston and Scarborough.”
Poussard looks to continue his schooling and hockey career at a prep school next season.
“I’ve had a couple looks at a few prep schools, Kents Hill, Brewster (Academy), and Berwick (Academy),” he said. “It’s all up in the air right now, but I am definitely playing hockey next year and hopefully further my career even further.”

As a parent of a player from Cheverus I find it interesting that not one player from Cheverus was chosen. 4-Kennebunk did not make the playoffs.3 Deering did not make the playoffs. Who does the voting ?
