UNE learn hard lesson in first round defeat

By  Published: 26th February 2011

It was yet another season of learning, at times a hard lesson, for the University of New England on what it takes to play NCAA Division-III hockey.

Today was one of those lessons.

Scott Schroeder and Emmond Bell scored two goals and an assist to lead top-seeded Norwich University past Univ. of New England, 10-1, in ECAC Quarterfinal action before 1,683 at Kreitzberg Arena.

UNE only had seven shot the entire game, while Conner Brogan and Mike Roper spilt time in net, facing 50 shots, making 40 saves.

The Nor’easters were down 3-1 after one period as Senior Jack Nolin scored the lone goal of the period for UNE.

Norwich scored five times in the second period and added a pair in the third period to take a commanding 10-1 lead.

At the 7:27 mark, Justin Miner found the back of the net, beating Sean Gerich, who replaced Parker Carroll in the third period.

Carroll took the win in making four saves to improve to 10-0-2 on the season.

Norwich will host the ECAC East semifinals next weekend where they will face the University of Southern Maine, who upset the third-seeded University of Massachusetts-Boston squad earlier today. Castleton State will meet Babson in the other semifinal contest.
