Torris gives a career performance; USM advances

By  Published: 26th February 2011

The third-seeded UMass-Boston peppered Braely Torris with 61 shots, but could only get one past the freshman netminder as the sixth-seeded University of Southern Maine completed the upset in the first round of the ECAC East Quarterfinal matchup with a 4-1 victory at Clark Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.

Torris, a native of Eckville, Alberta, made 60 saves to lead the Huskies to their first win in the tournament since 2006, and was just one save shy of the school record set by Chris Buck against Norwich University back on Oct. 28, 1988.

After a scoreless first period, David Nies opened the scoring for Southern Maine just 1:56 into the second period with an unassisted goal.

Zach Joy made it 2-0 with 2:40 left in the period as Jon Rutt and Paul Conter added assists on the play.

At 8:53 of the third period, Dan Rautenberg tallied the Huskies third goal of the game with an unassisted goal, giving Southern Maine took a commanding 3-0 lead.

Torris, who had 39 saves through two periods of play, finally had his shutout streak broken as Eric Tuffman scored with 5:40 to play in the game.

The Beacons pulled senior netminder Thomas Speer for the extra attacker and Conter made sure the Huskies would advance to the second round with an empty-net goal at 18:34 of the third period.
