In their third straight game, the Portland Pirates needed extra time to decide the outcome.
Luke Adam and Corey Tropp scored in the shootout to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Charlotte Checkers in front of 3,417 at the Time Warner Arena in Charlotte, NC.
Portland started the season losing their first two games on the road, but has since run off three straight wins while on their current road trip through Virginia and North Carolina.
It appeared the Pirates might have been able to skate away the win in the regulation, but the Checkers had other ideas, scoring with .5 seconds left in the game.
With Pirates’ defenseman Alex Biega off for hooking late in the third period, Charlotte pulled their goaltender, Mike Murphy to have a two-man advantage, skating 6-on-4.
Checkers’ forward Chris Terry parked himself in front of the net where he poked the rebound past Pirates’ goalie David Leggio, sending the game to overtime.
Leggio was getting the start after goalkeeper Jhonas Enroth was recalled by the Buffalo Sabres. Sabres’ goalie Ryan Miller has missed the last two days of practice prior to skating today, but head coach Lindy Ruff wanted to wait until after their morning skate before making the final decision.
If Miller is healthy, Enroth could be back in time for Wednesday’s game against Charlotte, or more than likely will be back with the Pirates on Friday.
Luke Adam, back after spending one game with the Sabres in Dallas, scored his seventh goal of the season, early in the first period as the Pirates took a 1-0 lead.
Charlotte tied the game at 6:21 of the first period as Terry scored his first of two goals of the night.
With the Pirates down 2-1 on a goal by Nick Dodge, they’d bounce back by scoring the next two goal to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Mark Parrish scored his third goal of the season at 9:33 of the second period, finding the rebound, after the Pirates crashed the crease trying to generate offense.
Derek Whitmore gave the Pirates the go ahead goal when he drilled the puck by Murphy with only a minute left to play in the period. Dennis Persson, who up the play, earned the assist.
Leggio made 24 saves on 27 shots to remain unbeaten with a 4-0-0 record. Checkers goalie Mike Murphy stopped 36 shots in the loss.
The Pirates finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play, while Charlotte went 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
NOTES: Colin Stuart scored an assist on Luke Adam’s goal to extend his point-scoring streak to five games… Paul Byron extended his point-streak to four games with an assist… With Enroth being recalled to Buffalo, the Pirates signed Chris Jablonski to an ATO. Jablonski is a media intern with the Charlotte Checkers, last playing hockey with Duke Blue Devils.
