Maineiacs keep on winning with a little payback in Drummondville

By  Published: 29th October 2010

The Lewiston Maineiacs did something they haven’t done since the 2007-08 campaign when they defeated the Drummondville Voltigeurs 5-4 at the Centre Marcel Dionne on Friday night.

Down 3-2 heading into the third period, Lewiston scored three times in the first five minutes of the final stanza to secure the elusive road win in Drummondville.

Drummondville held leads of 2-0 and 3-2. Ondrej Palat and Mac-Olivier Vachon scored in the first period for the Voltiguers. However, a late goal from Etienne Brodeur brought the Maineiacs to within a goal heading into the second period.

Alex Zafiris netted his first goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1 at 4:19 of the second period.

But Drummondville would snatch the lead right back about midway through the second when Palot scored his second goal of the night off a rebound from an Andrew Randazzo shot.

Drummondville would take the slim advantage to the locker room, but they were snake bitten in the third when Lewiston came out to score three goals in the first 4:55.

Michael Chaput had the equalizer for the Maineiacs and 34 seconds later Francis Beauvillier slipped a backhander through the legs of Domenic Graham to put Lewiston on top 4-3. Jess Tanguy would cap off the flurry with an insurance goal that eventually proved to be the game winner.

Drummondville made things interesting late when Jean-Philippe Mathieu scored with 12:30 left to play. However, Nicolas Champion and the Lewiston defense made the 5-4 lead hold up.

Champion turned aside 30 of the 34 shots he saw to earn the win, meanwhile Graham stopped 20 of the 25 shots he faced in the loss.
