Stefan Fournier scored a goal and an assist for the Lewiston Maineiacs as they defeated the Rimouski Oceanic, 4-2, in front of 2,590 at the Colisee de Rimouski on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first period, Rimouski opened the scoring early in the second period.
With Rimouski’s Alexandre Mallet off for high-sticking, Alex Belzile found the back of the net for the shorthanded goal, beating Maineiacs’ goaltender Nicholas Champion just 1:50 in the period.
The Maineiacs bounced back, outshooting the Oceanic 12-3 in the second period, and outscoring them 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Stefan Fournier scored his sixth goal of the season to pull the Maineiacs even, 1-1, midway into the second period.
Etienne Brodeur became the QMJHL leader in goals with his 14th goal of the season as he put Lewiston out front, 2-1, at 12:04 of the second period, beating Rimouski goalkeeper Carl Hozjan.
The Maineiacs made it 3-1 with a power play goal early in the third period.
With Julian Levasseur off for cross-checking at 3:01 of the period, it only took 50 seconds as Sam Henley was credited with the eventual game-winning goal. Stefan Fournier and Antoine Houde-Caron were given assists on the play.
Olivier Dame-Malka added Lewiston’s second power play goal of the game at 9:50 of the third period, beating Hozjan as the Maineiacs extending their lead to 4-1.
Rimouski’s Charles-Antoine Roy scored with two minutes to play in the game, cutting into Lewiston’s lead, 4-2.
Champions improved to 9-2-0 with the win, making 21 saves, while Hozjan stopped 29 of 33 shots on the night.
The Maineiacs went 2-for-8 with the man advantage, while Rimouski was scoreless, going 0-for-4 on the power play.
NOTES: Antoine Bibeau rejoined the Maineiacs has spending the weekend with the team on their trip in Gatineau. Bibeau stayed behind due to school, but joined the team this afternoon. The Maineiacs will finish their four-game road trip in Drummondville on Friday.
