Morin’s experience in Vancouver to pay dividends for Maineiacs

By  Published: 27th September 2010

Pierre-Olivier Morin had nothing to lose in Vancouver.

As a free agent invite to the Canucks rookie camp, it wasn’t likely he would make it to the main camp, but after some hard work, and leading the Canucks at the Young Stars tournament with two goals and an assist, he got the invitation to main camp.

“It was pretty fun,” said Maineiacs’ forward Pierre-Olivier Morin. “It was a good rookie tournament; we played Calgary, Edmonton, San Jose, and Anaheim.”

His two linemates at the rookie camp were Jordan Schroeder, who played at the University of Minnesota last season and Billy Sweatt, who played with Colorado College.

“It was pretty awesome (playing with those guys),” said Morin. “(Schroeder) was a first round pick two years ago, and Billy Sweatt was a second round pick.”

Once rookie camp was over he wasn’t sent back to Lewiston Maineiacs after impressing the Canucks’ brass enough to stick in the main training camp, earning himself a roster spot last Tuesday in a exhibition game against the Calgary Flames.

“I was pretty surprised, but I enjoyed the game,” Morin added “It was a pretty good experience playing against (Jerome) Iginla and (Jay) Bouwmeester.”

Morin quickly adjusted to the NHL game.

“The game is faster, and the (players) are bigger,” he said. “I had to move my feet faster and it will improve my game in juniors.”

The Canucks will monitor Morin throughout the season.

“They were impressed with my rookie tournament and said I worked hard,” Morin said. “They also said I had a good game (against Calgary), but said I had to come back to junior because I am only 19.”

“We will see at the end of the season maybe I will get a contract offer.”

Both Pierre-Olivier Morin and Maineiacs head coach JF Houle thought he had a good weekend.

“I thought he was awesome,” Houle added. “He had a lot of chances, he didn’t figure in the scoresheet, but he does a lot away from the puck. He had a lot of chances and missed the net a couple of times. You could tell his speed was above everybody else.”

“I have to come back here, get adjusted, and get scoring chances,” Morin said.
