Conboy joins the Sabres organization

The Buffalo Sabres have signed their first free agent bound for the Portland Pirates according to capgeek as Tim Conboy has signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Sabres.

Conboy spent the last four seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes organization, mostly playing in Albany, NY for the River Rats, who have relocated to Charlotte, NC this season.

The Farmington, MN native will certainly count has a veteran in the AHL with 342 AHL games with Cleveland and Albany.

Conboy has scored 16 goals, 42 assists for 58 points in his AHL career. He also has 59 NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes where he’s scored six assists.

At 6-2, 210-pounds, Pirates might recognize the name as Conboy has history of suspensions in the AHL, most notably for his actions against the Pirates.

In 2009, Conboy was suspended for four games after an altercation with the Pirates at HSBC Arena in Buffalo when he tackled Pirates’ forward Nathan Gerbe from behind. It was only a year prior, in 2008, when Conboy served an eight game suspension as a result of a line brawl in the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia Phantoms.

    I was seated in the upper rows of SEC 117 for that game between the River Rats and Pirates, and love Gerbe’s feistiness as much as I do he was too blame. He kicked one River Rat in the shin, suckered another, and instigated a fight with the Albany bench. How Conboy reacted (slamming Gerbe’s head onto the ice) was reprehensible and he deserved the suspension, but Gerbe had retribution coming for his antics.
