First, it was Felix Schutz scoring in front of a raucous crowd of nearly 80,000 to give Germany a thrilling overtime victory against the United States, and now it’s Philip Gogulla’s turn as he scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Swiss, sending the Germans to the semifinals of the IIHF World Championships.
The German national team will have their biggest task ahead as they will battle Russia, who is considered the favorite to win their 26th world championship. They knocked off Canada, 5-2, earlier in the day.
The goal was Gogulla’s first point of the tournament. Schutz has played in all seven games, scoring two goals and one assists for three points with plus-1 rating.
Regardless of the outcome, this will be Germany’s best finish in the World Championships since 1953 when they won the silver medal in 1953.
