Lewiston, ME – Thornton Academy dominated every aspect of the game en route to a 4-1 win over St. Dom’s in a Class A boy’s battle at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
TA had two even strength goals, a powerplay goal, and a shorthanded marker.
“I thought we played a decent game, I thought St. Dom’s played us well,” said Thornton Academy head coach Shawn Rousseau. “Our goaltending and defenseman were the difference today.”
Rick Hebb who made 19 saves on the night for Thornton Academy shared the same sentiments.
“I believe we did a good job controlling the rebounds and (allowing) the wide open shots that are easier for me to save.”
St. Dom’s head coach Steve Ouellette thought chances were more difficult to come by.
“They (Thornton Academy) seemed to get the easier chances,” Ouellette stated. “It seemed we had to work very hard to get one chance. They were creating off transition, a lot of 3-on-1’s, 2-on-1’s; it was getting scary with those for a while.”
Thornton Academy struck first when Nick Chen found the back of the net on the power play just 8:57 into the game.
At the 12:16 mark of the first period, Sam Canales made it 2-0 in favor of Thornton Academy.
CJ Maskut added both goals in the second period.
At the 3:28 mark, he made it 3-0 on a shorthanded breakaway and followed that up just four minutes later when he raced down the right boards and picked the top corner.
“It was a nice play by Tyler Danley (who) made an indirect pass off the boards,” CJ Maskut said. “I picked it up and it was a 2-on-1. The defenseman played it conservatively, so I just took a shot.”
St. Dom’s finally got on the board with 2:20 left the game when Kyle Holtet stopped Rick Hebbs shutout bid as he slid the puck around Hebb. Cam Brown and Shawn O’Connell were credited with the assists.
Shane Curtis made 36 saves in the losing effort.
