The Lewiston Maineiacs still can’t find the win column, dropping their 11th straight game; this time to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in a 5-2 loss in front a 2,821 at Centre 200 on Thursday night.
“We had a good first period; we did a good job battling along the wall, and we had a lot of effort and energy from most of the line-up,” Lewiston Maineiacs’ head coach Don MacAdam said.
“Second period we didn’t have the same battle level along the wall, it certainly reflected in the scoring.”
Maineiacs’ goalie Jordan Kennedy made 36 saves in his return to his hometown of Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Although, he was familiar with his surroundings as he played his midget hockey at the Centre 200, MacAdam wanted a better effort from the young netminder.
“There were a couple goals for sure that we wanted our goaltender to make the save on,” MacAdam added.
Cape Breton found the back of the net first when Nick McNeil notched his 19th goal of the season just before the midway point of the first period. The powerplay goal was set-up by Francis Mueller and Luke Adam.
“We needed our best players to be our best players,” said MacAdam. (Cape Breton’s) best players were their best players.”
The Screaming Eagles took a 2-0 lead just 1:24 into the second period as Jordan Kennedy couldn’t control the rebound and Logan Shaw was set-up beside the cage. The initial shot was let go by Brad Cuzner and the secondary assist went to Maximilien Le Sieur.
The lead extended to 3-0 as Swedish import Viktor Hertzberg added his eleventh goal at the 3:37 mark of the middle frame. Luke Adam and Nick McNeil added their second points of the game.
With the large number of player connections between the two teams, it was just a matter of time players scored on their former team.
Marco Desveaux who was claimed off waivers from Cape Breton at the beginning of the season put one home for the Lewiston Maineiacs with 10:05 to go the second. Mathieu Gingras and Samuel Henley were credited with the assists.
“Our fourth line got us our first goal and our first two lines didn’t create any offense,” said MacAdam. “It doesn’t give us enough balance and it doesn’t give us a chance to win.”
Only 17 seconds later, Marc Bourgeois who played the previous two seasons with Lewiston added Cape Breton’s fourth goal. Stephen Horyl, a former Maineiacs’ draft pick added an assist.
Luke Adam stretched the lead to 5-1 as Kennedy made two straight saves but couldn’t stop the third shot. The tally came at the 11:52 mark into the final period as McNeil and Hertzberg adding to their point totals.
“(Luke) Adam is an excellent goal scorer,” MacAdam said. “That was one of those goal scorer’s goals. I would certainly give the edge to the goal scorer as opposed to point the finger at our goaltender.”
Francis Beauvillier lifted one on the backhand as he received a cross ice pass from Alexander Beaton with 5:40 left in the game. The secondary assist went to Pierre-Olivier Morin.
Oliver Roy stopped 25 of the 27 shots he saw. Lewiston was 0-for-4 on the powerplay and Cape Breton was 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
