USA romps Bowdoin in Faceoff Classic

By  Published: 29th November 2009

The U.S. Under-18 National Team scored five third-period goals to pull away from Bowdoin in a 10-2 exhibition victory on Sunday evening.

Michael Mersch got things going for the National Team, circling behind the cage and feeding Brandon Saad in front for a one-timer to give the Under-18 Team a 1-0 lead at 2:27. The National Team doubled their lead midway through the period when Frankie Simonelli batted home a loose puck just outside the crease at 10:06. Matthew Nieto added a top-shelf score to end the period for the U-18′s.

Bowdoin trimmed the lead early in the second period when Brian Fry snapped a shot from the right circle that zipped under the right blocker of Jack Campbell at 3:02. Daniel Weiniger drew the Polar Bears closer on the powerplay at 7:29, taking a feed from Erik Olson and wristing a bullet to the top-left corner to make it 3-2. Team USA got both goals back before the end of the frame, however, as Bill Arnold rifled a hard, low shot that slipped under Nerland at 15:25 and Kevin Hayes banged home a one-timer at 17:29.

Jason Zucker scored a pair of goals in the third period while Luke Moffatt, Nick Shore and Hayes also added scores to seal the win.

Richard Nerland made 35 saves in a valiant effort between the pipes for Bowdoin. Jack Campbell finished with 29 for the National Team.
