Pirates fail on opportunity for fourth-straight win

By  Published: 28th November 2009

The Portland Pirates were only 13 seconds away from winning their fourth-straight game, but Andres Ambuhl spoiled the victory, leaving the Pirates to settle for only a single point, following Dane Byers game-winning goal in overtime to give the Hartford Wolf Pack a 4-3 win in front of 3,589 at XL Center on Friday night.

Portland hasn’t lost in regulation in their last seven games with 4-0-3-0 record.

The Pirates were down 2-0 after 40 minutes of play, but tied the game early in the third period.

Felix Schutz scored his second goal of the season when fired Jeff Cowan’s pass by Wolf Pack goalie Chad Johnson just 1:54 into the period.

Only 2:04 later, the Pirates tied the game at 2-2 when snapped a shot by Johnson.

Portland gained their only lead of the night, 3-2, after Nathan Gerbe scored his fifth goal of the season when he ripped a one-timer from the slot, beating Johnson.

At 19:47, Ambuhl fired a laser from the right circle that beat Pirates’ goalie JP Lamoureux, sending the game to overtime.

Lamoureux made his fifth straight start over Jhonas Enroth, stopping 23 of 27 shots.

A shot Lamoureux wishes he could have back came into OT when Dane Byers snapped a waffling that managed to find it’s way into the net completing the comeback for Hartford.

The Wolf Pack had a 2-0 after a pair of goals in the first period, including a shorthanded goal during a four-minute power play for the Pirates.
