Dumoulin (front row-L) celebrates the first of two Class A state titles with the Biddeford Tigers

Portland, ME – This weekend could turn out to be a very special weekend for Biddeford, Maine native Brian Dumoulin and his family as it’s expected he will drafted within the first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft scheduled for this weekend in Montreal.

Dumoulin, 17, is a former standout defenseman with Biddeford High School where he led the team to back-to-back Class A state titles in 2007 and 2008, the first in the school’s history.

During his junior year with the Tigers, he led the team in assists (48) and scoring (61) while playing in all 24 games.

Last season, he decided to make the jump to junior hockey in order to progress his playing career and didn’t miss a step with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs after leading all defensemen on the team in scoring with seven goals, 23 assists for 30 points in 41 games.

It was a great team to be a part of and I really enjoyed playing in the league,” said Dumoulin. “I really learned a lot and it will help me with the next step, for sure.”

The Jr. Monarchs would win 20-games in a row to end the season as they won the Eastern Junior Hockey League title.

He also represented the U.S. in international play as he took part in the Ivan Hlinka tournament, which is held in the Czech Republic and Slovakia each year.

Dumoulin is currently ranked 61st among North American Skaters by the Central Scouting Bureau and even as high as #51 by TSN’s Bob Mackenzie.

I’m feeling very optimistic about the weekend and I’m just trying to take it all in while in Montreal, said Dumoulin. I’m nervous just like every one else and I’m very interesting in see what this weekend has for me and seeing potentially what team I will be trying to suit up with.”

Another scouting service, International Scouting Service, gave Dumoulin solid praise for his skating ability and his on-ice presence.

“One of the youngest players available for the draft. Dumoulin impressed scouts with his play at the National Select 17 Festival, and by playing for Team USA at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament. He is an excellent skater with a great stride. Not really a physical D-man. Very good ice awareness. Has to get a bit more consistent in his own zone but has great potential. Enjoyed a fine season with the Monarchs scoring 7 goals and tallying 30 points in 41 games.”

“I enjoy looking at the (rankings) and seeing where I’m (ranked), but it doesn’t mean that much too me because the way these teams are you can be hated by one team and loved by another,” he said. The mock rankings aren’t taking into account where a team is picking and what a teams needs are. I pay attention to them to see where I potentially rank, but I could go a lot before that or a lot after that.”

Dumoulin attended the NHL combine in Toronto last month and did very well impressing many people with his fitness level and attention to detail. It provided and eye opening experience for the 17-year old, but an experience he gladly accepted.

“The combine was probably one of the toughest weekends of my life,” he said.

“Meeting Cam Neely (Vice President of the Boston Bruins) and other Assistant GM’s and Directors of Player Development was very eye opening and the workout was very difficult.”

“There was nothing like and I was glad I did it, but I’m glad it’s over, too.”

Several teams spoke with him at the combine, but he didn’t get any insight at the time as to where he might drafted.

Since then, he’s had conversations with several teams and one team in particular who has shown some serious interest in him has been the N.Y. Islanders. The Islanders have seven picks (1, 26, 31, 37, 56, 62 and 91) in the first three rounds.

“A couple teams have called back and said that I did really well with there interviews, but you never know (how things will go),” Dumoulin said. I’m just going to enjoy the weekend and we’ll see how it goes.”

If Dumoulin is drafted this weekend, he won’t change his plans as he still intends on playing for Boston College in the fall.

“I’ve so thrilled to be going down to (BC),” he said.”

“Coach (Jerry) York (Boston College head coach) and I spoke and he’s said he’s excited about the team we’re going to have next year and feels we can compete for a national championship not just next year, but the next four years.”
