Orono, ME – In a stunning upset, the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team held off the defending national champions Boston College Eagles, 2-1, at Alfond Arena on Sunday afternoon.

With 1:34 left in the third period, rookie Brian Flynn scored the go-ahead goal against the Eagles, who are ranked second in the nation.

Mike Banwell fired puck from the right face-off circle, which B.C. goalie John Muse stopped, but Flynn in front of the net found the rebound and slammed it home for the goal.

UMaine opened the scoring, after a scoreless first period, with a power play goal at 7:32 of the second period. Chris Hahn scored his fourth of the season when he picked up the loose puck and lifted it by Muse for the 1-0 Black Bear lead.

B.C. found the equalizer just 53 seconds into the third period after Benn Ferriero picked up his own rebound and slid the puck by UMaine goalie Scott Darling.

Darling made 24 saves as the Black Bears improved their record to 4-3-0, (1-2-0 in Hockey East) and they head to Providence, RI for a pair of weekend games against the Providence College Friars.

Boston College fell for the second game in three days, dropping a 4-1 decision to Notre Dame, a rematch of last season national championship game. The Eagles are now 5-3-0 on the season, 3-2-0 in Hockey East.

NOTES: UMaine held a 15-5 shots advantage in the first period. Chris Hahn’s goal in the second period extended his goal-scoring streak to three games.
