(Update) Sabres send first wave to Portland

By  Published: 30th September 2008

Portland, ME – Training camp for the Portland Pirates is only a day away and there are no surprises so far in whom the Buffalo Sabres, Portland’s new NHL affiliate, reassigned to Portland.

A total of 13 players were released from Sabres training camp, 12 were re-assigned to Portland including forwards Colton Fretter, Marc-Andre Gragnani, Derek Whitmore, Felix Schutz, and Colin Murphy; defensemen Mike Card and Mike Kostka; and goaltender Jhonas Enroth.

Former Pirates captain Tyler Bouck and Jimmy Bonneau have also been assigned to Portland, but must wait to see if they clear waivers by noon tomorrow.

Forward Phillip Gogulla, who has been very impressive in camp so far, was loaned to Kolner Haie of the DEL (Germany).

Josh Vatri and defenseman Paul Baier will be in Portland on a tryout basis.

The Sabres still have 34 players in training camp.

The Pirates already are going to feel the effects of injuries on the Sabres roster and the season hasn’t even started.

Sabres forward Paul Gaustad jammed his thumb in preseason action against Minnesota on Sunday and had surgery today to repair a torn thumb ligament in his right hand.

Gaustad will be out a minimum of 3-to-4 weeks.

UPDATE:
Goaltender Adam Dennis was assigned to Portland today by the Sabres and Tyler Myers was sent back to his junior club in Kelowna, BC.

The Sabres now have 32 players left in camp including Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy.
