Sabres sign Enroth; Portland Bound??

By  Published: 31st May 2008

It would appear the Portland Pirates have their goalie under wraps for next season as the Buffalo Sabres have signed Jhonas Enroth to a three-year entry-level contract.

The Sabres, who are expected to move their affiliation to Portland next season, has been under pressure to get Enroth signed by June 1 or risk losing his rights.

Enroth, 19, spent last in the Swedish Elite League with Sodertalje SK, posting a 2.13GAA, with a .932 save percentage and two shutouts in 27 games.

A finalist for the SEL Rookie of the Year award, the native of Stockholm, Sweden was drafted in the second round (46th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Sabres.

“We’re very happy to have Jhonas under contract,” said Regier. “He’s performed very well in Europe, and we look forward to his continued development as a member of our organization.”

Enroth also has an impressive background on the international stage, leading the Swedish National Team – Under 20 to a silver medal in the 2008 World Junior Championship held in the Czech Republic. He went 4-1 in the tournament with a 2.33GAA and a .905 save percentage.

The only loss came against Canada in the Gold Medal game, a 3-2 overtime loss in which Enroth stopped 18 of 21 shots faced.

On the other side of the coin, the Sabres have opted not to offer Benjamin Breault a contract.

Breault, 20, drafted in the seventh round (207th overall pick) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft played 62 games with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL, scoring 77 points (36g – 41a) in 62 games.

The 5-10, 183lbs native of Pembroke Ontario has played four years with Baie-Comeau, scoring 119 goals, 146 assists in 249 career games.

He’ll most likely go back to the “Q” next season and re-enter the draft in about three weeks from now.

I couldn’t agree more…. If the Pirates – I mean the Sabres AHL affiliate – was going to have any success, they needed to get this kid signed. With that said he’s said that he wants to play in the AHL and expects to play in Portland….. So that cool… a player who wants to be in Portland.

  2. That’s a Huge signing for the Sabres…Hopefully Enroth is willing to spend some time in the AHL and not go back to Sweden. I
