Ducks make several deals to help Pirates  | read this item

After having a couple days to digest all the moves made by the Anaheim Ducks, it was very clear what Ducks’ GM Brian Burke intentions were as he provided depth for the Ducks, but perhaps more importantly it provides the Pirates with some missing pieces as they prepare for the stretch drive to the Calder [...]

The American Hockey League’s version of trade deadline day has come and gone without much fan fare for the Portland Pirates. The Clear Day roster was submitted well in advance of the 3pm deadline and there won’t be many surprises when it’s released on Friday at 10am.

As soon as the Pirates gain veteran defenseman in Jay Leach, they lose another in Eric Weinrich. With 6:02 left in Tuesday’s game vs. Norfolk, Weinrich exchanged words Karl Stewart, which resulted in both dropping the gloves. After the scrum, Weinrich didn’t appear to be cut or in any pain or discomfort, but he taken [...]

That was an embarrassing loss for the Pirates. Radek Smolenak scored two goals to propel the Norfolk Admirals easily past Portland, 5-1. The loss came less than 24 hours after the Pirates played what had to be one of their better games of the season against the Worcester Sharks – a 6-1 win in Worcester.

Pirates are in the dog days of summer, err….I meant winter  | read this item

Portland, ME – Most of the time we think of baseball when we talk about the dog days of summer, but for the Portland Pirates they can also lay claim to the same moniker despite the fact that it’s February and there’s a foot of snow on the ground. The Pirates have played 55 games [...]

Ebby gets the call  | read this item

If there’s someone who you can pull for to get a call to the show, it has to be Andrew Ebbett. From day one, he has done nothing short of busting his butt night in and night out. That’s not to say that others on the roster haven’t worked hard, but this kid just has [...]

Schedule not only an issue for the fans  | read this item

The number one complaint I hear from Pirates fans is the fact that Portland plays the same teams over and over and over so many times, the schedule actually gets boring to them. Funny thing is the players feel the same way. Talking with Pirates’ defenseman Andy Schneider yesterday after practice while working on this [...]

The AHL has laid down the law, hitting Bridgeport Sound Tigers forward Kip Brennan hard with a 15 game suspension for blindside punch to Pirates forward Geoff Peters in last Saturday’s game in Bridgeport, Conn. Pirates building a bond  | read this item

There’s nothing like team bonding and trying to build those relationships and friendships that will carry a team deep into the playoffs and potentially to a championship season. It’s something the Ducks are big on and if you look back to last season when they spent the day skating and playing shinny on the Rideau [...]
